How to Get Started with the Engine Simulation

How to Get Started with the motorift.com Engine Simulation

After you download the app and open the app you’ll land on this screen.

Select “Add demo car” to select a demo car to get started. Starting a demo car saves commonly found specifications into the app so you don’t have to look them up, if you’re starting with a stock vehicle this is a quick way to get going.

If your car isn’t listed you’ll save time if you get started with a similar car and change the settings (bore size, cylinder head flow, etc) to match yours. Once you have at least one car in the saved car list you’ll be able to select it from this screen or add a new car with the + icon on the bottom right of the screen.

Main Engine Simulation Screen

Choose the car you just added from the list and you’ll be taken to the main screen.

The main simulation screen is where most of the app “happens”. Scroll through to the bottom of the screen and get familiar with it. You can select a category to change the settings, for example if you tap “weather” you can change the air parameters used in the simulation.

Change Horsepower Goal

If you select “horsepower goal” you can change your horsepower and rpm goal and the 1/4 mile time, boost or vacuum needed and suggested parts will reflect. If you select 1/4 mile time you can change your 1/4 mile goals and see how much horsepower would be needed to meet that goal.

With a goal of 800 engine horsepower you’ll get 670 to the wheels (select wheel horsepower to change the transmission loss percentage) and you’ll need 19 lbs of boost if you have a BSFC of 0.65, as shown in the next image.

Your 1/4 mile prediction and recommended part sizing will reflect changes to your horsepower goals.

The accuracy of your BSFC and Air Fuel ratios, boost or vacuum level and weather parameters determine how accurate the results of the engine simulation are for the given combination. The more accurate your engine data is the more accurate your results will be.

If you select BSFC you can change it and your horsepower goal will reflect the change. Selecting “wheel horsepower” will let you change percentage of power the drivetrain loses. This changes your 1/4 mile times. Selecting air fuel ratio to change the air fuel ratio, changes to it will be reflected in the horsepower goal.

Depending on the selected tuning parameter your boost or vacuum level will change, or your horsepower will change.

Main Screen

Other information on the main screen includes recommended fuel, intake and exhaust sizing.

The exhaust suggestions are based on cylinder head data and port sizing. The size of the exhaust primary or individual exit tubes are part of what determines where in the RPM band your engine makes peak torque. You can change your RPM goals to see the exhaust sizing change to reflect it.

Weather Screen

From the main screen press the menu button in the bottom right corner of the screen for the menu.

Selecting Weather will open the weather screen, scroll to the bottom of the screen to get familiar with it. Select “use current location” to use your location, select a date and time from the top of the screen, and finally select Get Weather. The weather data will load, you can correct for elevation or if you enter the readings from another weather source choose not to.

Once your temperature, elevation and outside air pressure are set, press the check mark at the bottom of the screen to apply the weather settings to the engine simulation.

Changing the weather and elevation will give you more accurate horsepower and 1/4 mile estimates. Thank you for downloading the app and reading this tutorial!
